The Quiet Hour

Sheer curtains parted at a window, framing a close, soft-focus view of green foliage beyond, in gentle natural light.

An hour to stop pushing towards the next thing.

You don’t have to arrive feeling calm.

You don’t have to know what you’re going to do with the hour.

And you certainly don’t have to be good at being quiet.

This is simply an invitation to spend an hour with a little less pressure to get somewhere.

You might be thinking you don’t have time for this.

That an hour feels like too much when there’s so much still undone.

Or that if you stop, even for an hour, everything you’ve been holding together might fall apart.

What if it didn’t?

What if an hour away from it all was exactly what allowed you to keep going? Not because you’ve pushed through, but because you’ve actually stopped for a minute.

Perhaps you’ll write. Or read. Think about something that’s been sitting at the back of your mind. Attend to one quiet task. Sit with a decision.

Perhaps you’ll do something else entirely.

You might arrive feeling scattered and stay that way for a while. You might notice yourself settling. You might not notice anything particularly dramatic at all.

There is nothing to get right.

The invitation is simply there.

An hour of quiet on your own can be easy to talk yourself out of. Something else always seems to need that time more.

But an hour on Zoom is just a call, like any other. Easy to put in the diary. Easy to justify. Easy to actually keep.

How it works

We’ll begin together with a short welcome and a little space to arrive.

During that welcome, I’ll offer a reflective prompt, a question you might like to consider or explore.

It’s completely voluntary, and entirely yours to use however suits you. You might use it for journaling. You might simply sit and ponder it. You might bring it into the breakout room as a conversation starter. Or for this hour, you might ignore it altogether and read, or do something else entirely.

Then the hour is yours.

You can use the time in whatever way feels right for you, from wherever you happen to be when we begin.

You’ll be in the shared Zoom space with the other people who have joined, but there is no expectation to talk, share what you’re doing or explain yourself.

You can simply get on with whatever you’ve chosen to give your attention to.

And if you’d like some company…

There will also be a breakout room available for anyone who’d like to talk about what quiet means for them, what they’re noticing or simply spend some time in conversation.

It’s entirely optional.

And there may or may not be other people who fancy joining you that particular week.

That’s okay too.

The conversation isn’t the point of the hour. It’s simply another possibility.

You don’t have to make good use of the hour

There’s no productivity target.

No expectation that you’ll finish something.

No requirement to feel peaceful by the end.

You might write three pages.

You might read two.

You might spend half an hour staring out of the window before deciding what you actually want to do.

You might start the hour thinking, I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing here.

All of that is welcome.

The invitation is simply to notice what happens when, for an hour, you don’t immediately have to push towards the next thing.
