Just This Hour

A sunlit wooden table with dust motes catching the light, warm morning sun streaming through a paned window in the background.

There is something you’ve been meaning to do. You keep thinking you’ll get to it.

Maybe it’s a task you’ve been putting off. Something you’ve been meaning to start. A bit of life admin. A project you’ve lost momentum with. Or simply something you’d like to give a little attention to, if only you could get yourself to begin.

You don’t have to finish it. You don’t have to know how much you can accomplish. And you don’t need to arrive feeling motivated.

For this hour, there is just this one bit of time and whatever you want to do with it.

We’ll start together

We’ll begin in the room together, with a little time to arrive and decide what you’re going to give your attention to. Then we’ll have some manageable time to get on with it. We’ll come back together briefly, pause, and then begin again.

That’s it.

No productivity techniques. No targets. No expectation that you’ll have something impressive to show for the hour. Just a bit of time, some company and the opportunity to make a start.

You can change your mind

You might start with the thing you brought. You might discover that it isn’t actually where you want to begin.

Your attention might wander. You might get stuck. You might change direction halfway through. You can return to what you were doing, choose something else, or simply take a moment to work out what you need.

There is no requirement to complete the thing you brought.

The aim isn’t to make you stay on task at all costs. It’s to give you an hour in which you can meet whatever you’re trying to do with a little less pressure.

You don’t have to do it perfectly

Perhaps you get loads done. Perhaps you make a start. Perhaps you spend half the hour figuring out where to begin, and that’s useful in itself. Perhaps you realise that the thing you’ve been trying to make yourself do isn’t actually the thing that needs your attention right now.

All of that counts.

This isn’t about proving that you can be productive if you just try hard enough. It’s about seeing what happens when you give something your attention, with a little space around you and no need to push yourself through it.

For now, there is just this hour

You don’t need to sort out the rest of the week. You don’t need to tackle the whole list. You don’t even need to finish what you start.

There is just this hour. And whatever you’d like to do with it.
