I recently took a family member to a hospital appointment. It was one of the first appointments of the day and, because the traffic had been light, we arrived earlier than expected.
The computerised check-in wouldn’t let us check in, so I assumed we’d simply got there too early. Off we went to the outpatient reception desk.
Except we weren’t too early.
The doctor had phoned in sick that morning and the appointment had been cancelled.
There was a missed call from an unknown number. The hospital had tried to let us know. We’d simply missed the message.
Nothing dramatic. People get sick. Appointments get cancelled. There wasn’t really anything that could have been done differently.
And yet, there was a message waiting for us that we hadn’t seen.
That happens too.
We miss things. Messages. Nudges. Feelings. Thoughts that keep returning. Sometimes we notice them. Sometimes we don’t.
I should have noticed.
Why didn’t I listen?
I’ve known this for ages.
Maybe.
Or maybe you just didn’t notice it then. Maybe there was too much else going on. Maybe you weren’t ready to notice it.
Maybe you’re human.
If you’d like to keep the conversation going,
